False Lashes Used In Mascara Ads…

This is something that has been bothering me for some time. Every ad I’ve seen lately has a model wearing false eyelashes to promote their mascara. What happened to truth in advertising? This is just so blatantly obvious to me as a makeup artist, esp. in the commercials…and now the public is evidently getting wise to it. “L’Oréal has been condemned for producing “misleading” mascara adverts featuring Penelope Cruz”. Read this article in the UK Daily Mail.

I work in the design field, and I’ve worked on several commercials for Mascaras. Honestly, what you’re seeing sometimes doesnt even exist in the real world. We have designers and artists who literally draw in the lashes and fix any imperfections. Yeah. It’s wierd. The people who work on the commercials think it looks terrible. But this is what the clients want because they think this sells the mascara.

I use Telescopic mascara and my eyelashes look awesome with it. They look super long and I don’t wear fake lashes. So, it is possible to have great eyelashes with this product.

Hi Mel
I don’t doubt that mascara works and gives you longer looking lashes, that’s why we use it. It’s just that the advertisers are using obvious false lashes in their ads saying that it is just the product. I even understand retouching and fixing imperfections, but when they show the model after using mascara and she is suddenly wearing very long thick false eyelashes, come on, who do they think their fooling?

If you have long eyelashes in the first place, it is easy to believe that the person is wearing false eyelashes. Mine go up to my eyebrows! But you are right, they aren’t fooling anyone. I am sure in every commercial they use false ones and other airbrushing techniques for effect. It’s quite disappointing.

[…] How do those mascara commercial girls do it!?!? Well, beside the fact that thick lashes generally aren’t the only sign indicating that they won the genetic lottery; they’ve got a little secret. And it’s not the mascara they’re peddling (as discussed at Makeup Beat). […]
