Joey Heatherton’s 60’s Sex Kitten Haircut…

Joey Heatherton could sing, dance and act. She got her start on B’way as a child actor in The Sound Of Music. But what really stands out in my mind is her haircut. Kind of a shag with extra long bangs that were perfect for throwing around while dancing the “Frug”. And Joey could really throw it around. The other image is of Joey on my favorite dance show growing up…Hullabaloo, where Joey shocked people with her wild dancing. I’ll never forget it! Evidently she also released a single by the same name, which I don’t remember. But I saw her a lot on The Dean Martin Show and Johnny Carson’s Late Night Show. I read that she was in some memorable films that I’d like to see…her first in 1963, Twilight Of Honor (with Richard Chamberlain) and 64’s Where Love Has Gone (with Bette Davis). I also missed the film she starred in The Happy Hooker Goes To Washington (with George Hamilton). I did see John Waters 1990 Cry Baby (with Johnny Depp) but there wasn’t enough Joey.
Unfortunately things went down hill in the 70’s. She married pro football player Lance Rentzel who got arrested for showing his stuff to a little girl. That would be enough to drive anyone crazy. So next came the divorce, the cocaine, then the eating disorder, cause a girls gotta be thin, gotta sparkle, gotta go-go. Sad times.

I believe this was a lipstick ad, probably for Revlon. But Joey mostly wore pale lips.

This was one of several albums she made…don’t know why she’s topless (but you can really see how great the haircut is here). I’ve seen the uncensored shot and Joey had really sweet ta-tas. She also appeared on the cover of PlayBoy, but that was in 97 when times were getting tuff.

This was the Hullabloo logo. It only ran for two seasons in 65 & 66. But the dancers were the best and Joey was featured many times. I dreamed of dancing on Hullabloo as a kid. I always thought it was better then Shindig, that other TV dance show. Plus it was one of the first in color. Yes kiddies…TV used to only be in blk & wht.

Joey’s poster…Yikes stripes! She was so sexy with naturally pouty lips and a cute turned-up nose, and that hair, always falling in her eyes. Plus she was the Queen of the sexy side-long glance complete with lush eye lashes. So sixties, so groovy man!

So this movie Blue Beard was made in Europe and was released in 72. I have to find it…it has to be fantastic. Look at that cast! Joey Heatherton, Raquel Welch, Verna Lisi and Alain Delon’s daughter Nathalie, not to mention Richard Burton, all in one film…gotta see it! And I can’t forget to mention the Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress ad Joey sings and dances her heart out in. Check it out on YouTube.
I’ll never forget you Joey Heatherton.
Go For The Gold…

Gold makeup never goes out of style, it’s a classic. And I love the way they used gold powder in the hair. Finger waves also a retro-classic, and these are so well done, I wish I knew who did the hair and makeup. Looks like some real gold leaf was placed on the neck. And what fun they must have had putting all those little gold beads (cake decorations?) around the models eyes. I wonder if they made that shot lying down, it would make it soooo much easier.

Marlene Dietrich Vogues…
Check out these hairdo’s and the gold body paint on the legs. You can see how Madonna was inspired by this 1944 film “Kismet“.
The video is kinda long but def worth watching. Pretty amazing that Dietrich did all this dancing. Go Marlene…it’s your birthday (belated it’s Dec 27th actually)!

Max Factor Pancake Foundation…

“There were major makeup problems presented by the introduction of color to motion pictures. Technicolor had achieved excellence from the standpoint of film and photography, but it was quite apparent that the make-up used for black and white film was completely unsatisfactory. Actors’ faces tended to appear green or fiery red-or any other color-on the screen. Caused by reflections from costume colors or even fabrics used on the set.
After six months of laboratory research and experimentation, an entirely new type of make-up material was created by Max Factor, a makeup in solid cake form to be applied with a slightly moistened silk sponge. For want of a better name, it was called Pan-Cake Makeup, “pan” because of its small, flat, pan-like container, and “cake” because of the form in which it was made. Used for the first time on all members of the cast in Walter Wanger’s “Vogues of 1938,” starring Warner Baxter and Joan Bennett, it worked miracles. Critics singled out the makeup and raved about it in their reviews. One wrote: “Never before in a color motion picture have the players looked so natural and realistic. They were so lifelike, in fact, that it seemed like they would step down from the screen into the audience at any minute.”
Next, Pan-Cake Makeup was almost immediately used with equal success in Samuel Goldwyn’s “Goldwyn’s Follies” and after that it became the standard makeup for all color motion pictures.
Naturally pleased with the overwhelming acceptance of Pan-Cake Makeup, Max Factor registered the name with the United States Patent Office in 1937 — content with the professional category it occupied. But then the fashion models used in the two films began wearing the makeup night and day because they loved its transparent effect and its “non-theatrical” appearance on their faces. Soon, motion picture stars were buying Pan-Cake Makeup for their off-screen appearances as well, and the clamor for it reached deafening proportions from women in all walks of life. Launched to the “Women of America” via distinctive full-page, two-color ads featuring a screen star portrait and illustrations of the product, Pan-Cake Makeup became, almost overnight, one of the fastest-growing, largest-selling, single makeup item in the history of cosmetics. Today, it is still on the market, making it one of the most popular cake makeup products ever created. All thanks to a man named Max Factor.”
